Taking the Bull by the Horns in Community Involvement & Local Dining

Here at Alcan, we can’t wait for the 94th Annual Fall Fair & Exhibition!

B0s2EhTIAAAXCB6For as long as I can remember, our family has shared Fall Fair meals at the Dawson Creek Exhibition, always going to the South Peace United Church booth for their friendly atmosphere, fantastic pies, and perfect fair food. After wandering the cow barn and the 4H displays, the food booth was always the first stop before hitting the midway or chucks. With the Alcan Smokehouse here to stay, we welcome opportunities to partner with community organizations who make Dawson Creek a great place to live and grow. We have partnerships with the Dawson Creek Literacy Society and the Dawson Creek Choral Society, and we are proud to announce our newest partner for the duration of this year’s Fall Fair: South Peace United Church.

The United Church is a staple in our community and across Canada, with an open and welcoming atmosphere, ongoing special events and concerts, and a strong voice for acceptance of all people. We are happy to be able to support the church’s major annual fundraiser to ensure the continuation of some of the many great initiatives that they provide in Dawson Creek including St. Mark’s Ecumenical Food Bank, the Food for Kids Program (helping families provide enough food for their children), and the local Benevolent Fund (helping individuals in need).

So when you head to the Fall Fair this week, stop by South Peace United’s newly renovated food booth where they will be selling pulled pork that has been rubbed, smoked, and prepared by the Alcan prep team. Our pulled pork is made from 8-10 lb butt roasts that are coated in a secret recipe apple spice rub, and smoked for 12 to 14 hours in our smoker with hickory and red alder woods. And lucky you, we’ve shared our apple cabbage and caraway slaw recipe with the church, so you can enjoy an Alcan pulled pork sandwich with all the usual toppings! Available all day long, Wednesday, August 10th through Sunday, August 14th.

But don’t forget about downtown dining!

Whether it’s before you head to the chucks or after a fun day at the midway, don’t miss out on our special menu items and drink specials all week long at our downtown location on 102nd avenue. Stop in for a sit-down (and air conditioned!) meal with our uniquely historical Dawson Creek vibe.

One of the most exciting things about being a non-franchised enterprise has been working with the creativity of our staff to dream up entire special menus for various events. Our special menu for Fall Fair Week celebrates our amazing Peace Country beef combined with essential fair foods! On top of our regular menu, you’ll be able to order jalapeno poppers, deep-fried pickles, chicken and corn fritters, baron of beef dip, Maui ribs, and pies, pies, pies (Saskatoon, rhubarb and mixed berry, peaches and cream, bananas foster cream, and salted lavender honey). All special items are also available for take-out, as we know the entire town will be on the move that week! By popular demand, we’re also serving Budweiser beer on special, along with some refreshing lemonade radlers. And if it happens to be a rainy week, we always have delicious hot soup, a fireplace, and can mix up a hot toddy or special coffee to warm your spirits.

We’re also rolling out Saturday Brunches starting August 13th! Every Saturday from this day forward will have a brunch menu in addition to the regular lunch options

Support Local Food, Local Economy

The theme for this year’s Fall Fair Parade (organized by the Noon and Sunrise Rotary Clubs of Dawson Creek  and the Dawson Creek & District Chamber of Commerce) is Supporting Agriculture – Buy Local, Buy Canadian. While we aren’t putting a float in the parade this year—we’ll waving and tossing candy next year, I promise—this theme is the mantra we base our business on every single day. We’re always looking forward to new business opportunities with local suppliers, including market gardens, greenhouses, farms, and more. We already buy meat directly from the South Peace Colony and Lawrence’s Meat Packing, and have plans to expand to include local produce.

We strive to provide fresh locally grown food to our clientele while ensuring that as many dollars as possible are returned to our local economy and the people who raise their families and live their dreams in this wonderful region. Our family is proud to continue that support for local agriculture by beginning what we hope will be a long-term involvement not only at the Greatest Show in the Peace, but at many other community events to come!

Happy Father’s Day

Father’s Day is approaching rapidly. Alcan Smokehouse has set aside this Saturday, June 18th,  for high-fiving the dads and grandpas in our lives.  So, what does Alcan do to celebrate?  Did a brunch for Mother’s Day, and everyone saw and tasted that we had a few more tricks up our sleeve than smoked meat.  But a brunch does didn’t fit our vision for the dads…..so..we looked at the one thing that guys have been asking for, a steak! Succulent, meaty rib-eyes on are on the menu for Saturday night.  But to make it even more special, come on down for fresh oysters.  We are going to cook them in the smoker for an unbelievable taste.  Add to those, a few other touches, such as a slow smoked baron of beef, served up as a beef dip in freshly baked french bread; lobster risotto, and stuffed portabello mushrooms. All of this will be on top of our regular menu, so it’s going to be a busy night for Andrea, Terrill, David and the rest of the kitchen crew, and our hard working servers.  We are open from 4:00 to 11:00 on Saturday night, so there is a time open to please everyone!  Every dad or grandpa who attends that night will be entered into a draw to win a gift card from Corlane Sports.  Spend your Sunday relaxing and let Alcan do the cooking on Saturday.  Reservations are recommended, so call early at 250 782 4114 and book your table.
